For starters, I (and my google analytics) want to thank you for clicking through far enough on the new site to make it here! Matt and I have worked on this rebrand for several months now, and we are proud to finally be able to put it out into the world.

But let’s take a step back– I’m Levi Slaver, I work in Content Design + Development here at Powell Strategic and created our new brand identity and website. Nice to meet you! What you’re looking at right now is the start of our monthly blog, Pro Strats! We’ll be posting deep dives into the ongoing projects here at Powell Strategic, along with insights and lessons-learned that you can apply to your business. DON’T YOU WORRY. You’ll be able to signup for our email newsletter at the end of this article so you don’t miss a thing.

But we’re here to talk about the rebrand– so to start, let’s have Matt talk about where he was at when he originally crafted the brand:

“When Powell Strategic started in 2013, I was a staff of one, and designed the old logo on my own (in MS Paint – yikes). I liked it because it was clean, professional, and simple. As one of our clients said, “it was inoffensive.” Obviously, we were going for something more than that.

Levi worked with me on imagery and design and the new branding is a radical departure. However, it sings to me because it feels more like where we are today: modern, growing, energetic, and bold. I think it is a testament to Levi’s listening and design skills to make such a move – like many business owners, it is easy to fall in love with the old. It is comfortable, like an old hat. But in fact, we needed to breathe life into our own communications. The process and final result felt as comfortable for me as we try to make it for each and every customer. I’m excited about our new branding, and feel very proud to wear the logo and hand it out every day.”

In the past year, Matt and I increasingly felt that the branding no longer characterized how we wanted the company to feel. Where the old brand had a more reserved, modest quality to it, we now wanted something that would boldly stand out amongst the crowd– a brand that you could instantly recognize across a room.

For our new brand identity, we wanted to move away from the more traditional typographical logo and embrace an iconographic symbol that we could rally around. Identifying the right imagery for a logo can often take time– but in our case, the lighting bolt came both quickly and naturally. The lighting bolt strikingly exemplifies concepts of energy, rarity, and magnitude– and along with personal significance to Matt, it just felt like the perfect imagery to base our new brand on. In lieu of boring you with the minor details, I’ll let the branding speak for itself:

I absolutely love putting together mockups and visualizations for brands as I create them. As you can see here, they take a simple concept on a piece of paper and turn it into something that feels tangible and exciting.

Completing this rebrand effort has left us more invigorated and proud of the business than ever. That feeling of handing out a business card that you are deeply proud of helps remind you why you got into business in the first place.

If you also want to grow your business or brand into something that you can feel deeply proud of, get in touch with us! It’s our mission to help build better, happier businesses that enhance quality of life in the areas they serve.
